Yoga and breathing
Yoga
In yoga, ill health is regarded as the product of imbalances and blockages in the flow of energy, or prana, through the body. The practice of pranayaina takes the form of breathing exercises. Unlike circulation or digestion, we can consciously control our breathing, and this acts as a link between the conscious and unconscious parts of our bodies.
Besides improving oxygen intake, purification and circulation of the blood and lymph, and thereby increasing the flow of oxygen to every cell in the body, pranayama exercises are also believed to improve mental alertness, concentration and creativity, as well as being a form of deep relaxation, producing a sense of calm and serenity. Used at times of stress, when breathing typically becomes fast and shallow, they can dispel tension
